I'm not sure how many people read this blog (I see it's followers have scorched up to 3 lol), but I thought I would post about the new (and very old) surfboards that have hit the mainstore at Pelican Bay, Monkey Tail.
First up are the new Eagle surfboard range:

West of Ireland

Bid farewell to West of Ireland this weekend as it joins other surf sim ghosts in the Second Life book of memories.

There will of course be a phoenix from the flames (complete with a new Nancy Blakes pub), lol you can't keep the Irish down, but as I am led to understand there will be no waves to surf. So drop into the current Nancy Blakes and enjoy one last pint of decent beer.

Surf Shop 6 - Syx Toshi

Syx Toshi is a good friend and an amazing designer/builder. Seriously, everything this guy does has soul. Please check out the new Surf Shop 6 at Monkey Cove, it will just blow your surf socks off.

Lol, those of you that know me in real will know I have a passion for seaplanes (inherited from my father).
Heck I'm tempted to ditch my trailer and move into SS6 to live.

Tis time to say goodbye to what I have always considered to be one of the most beautiful and characterful surf sims on second life. Counting created a work of art with this sim and it's sad to see it go.

Get your backsides down there now if you have not done so already and ride the super long Epic until the sun sets March 23.

Casa De Laville

I've surfed Casa de Laville a few times now but due to real life commitments have not had much time to spend on Second Life as of late. Anyways I wanted to post about this place so here is a couple of snaps for you. (click photos to enlarge)

Nash has done a cool job on this sim, with lots of different waves hitting the shores at once. It's well worth checking out if you haven't done so already.

Dee Waverider - Playa Sol Mananero

Well I've surfed in icey conditions plenty of times in real life, so found it strangley comforting and familiar ground to do it on SL too. If you have not done so already, get your backsides down to Sol Mananero and remember to wrap up warm.

I'm hitting the surf this weekend ( complete with full Winter steamer, boots, gloves, and hood) so unless the 7 inches of snow we currently have melts, I'll be spending most of next week thawing out lol. Catch you all later I hope. ~ peace~

DW SURF CO - Pelican Bay

Well, I've finally got to set up a main shop where it all began at Monkey Cove. And having checked back with some old snapshots of mine I have come to realize that it stands on the land where my first home used to be ; the same spot where I designed and made my very first board.

Behind the Surf Shop there is a small public area complete with waves (fluffies) and a campfire for just chillin. It's off the main beach so will most probably be a nice quiet spot :)

I want to say a big thankyou to Seb and Heather for the new Cortes wave. Love it guys :) You can get nice and intimate with this wave, as you can see from the pic above. I'm in there somewhere lol.

In fact a big thanks to all the wave creators, I'm always gonna love the Maverick (don't see it about much these days) and anything by HP. You ALL rock.

DW Surf Co "Bigger & Longer"

First off, I'm gutted, my fave bike sim on SL has crashed and burned. Farewell RoadLost.

That aside, things are cool :) Always said I wanted 4 shops max, and now I have them. One at West of Ireland, one at Chi, one at Mori and now one at the very cool revamped Tsunami, seriously Col has done a fantastic job on this sim, it has a really good vibe about the place.

I've got some new longbaords out, retro as always. I do make my boards for the fun of it and not for the Lindens but until recently I've never been sure if they are well received or not. But just lately I have had a few comments giving positive feedback, so nice to know :)

A couple of buddies are also making new boards too, which is fantastic for the SL surfing scene. If you look in the pic below, behind my new boards you can just see that Mick has made some new ones too. Woot!

Here's a pic of me taking one of Doxx's latest out for a spin :)

The sim where I live Monkey Cove has expanded again and now has a very nice addition called Aussie Cove. Watch out for the fluffies here though, the air you can get off them is just criminal lol.

Big Guns at Sunrise

In order to ride really big waves, one uses a board called a gun. The key design features of these boards are related to survival rather than performance. Ease of entry to the wave, control whilst dropping (or sometimes free falling) into the waves, the speed to achieve these and successfully make the wave are the factors that dictate the Gun's design.

Nobody is quite sure when the Polynesians began to surf, but Hawaiian chants which date back to 15th century AD tell stories of surfing exploits which seem to show that surfing was a major part of Hawaiian life long before that. For as long, perhaps, as the Hawaiians had existed as an independent race.. And though we know that the Tahitians, for instance, had long practised surfing it was Hawaii which was the source of the sports great expansion.

The first Westerner to see surfing in action was Captain Cook, the great British navigator who came across Hawaii in the late 1770s on one of the voyages of exploration which also led to the European discovery and settlement of Australia. When he sailed into Kealakekua Bay, in Hawaii, he was astounded to see the Islanders catching waves on boards and wrote a description of it:

"The surf, which breaks on the coast around the bay, extends to the distance of about 150 yards from the shore, within which space the surges of the sea, accumulating from the shallowness of the water, are dashed against the beach with prodigious violence. Whenever, from stormy weather of any extraordinary swell at sea, the impetuosity of the surf is increased to its utmost height, they choose this time for this amusement . . ."

The Glide

it promises to set up the inside line

where the speed is.

It's hard to catch but I work

into it until I feel the glide

and push and I'm up

snapping a turn across the face

then off the bottom and trimming to the spot

where the flying begins.

The Good Life

Life is good at the moment. I've been getting in some good RL surfing at my local break and getting some good use out of everything in my quiver. I must confess to not surfing much on SL the last few days as I've been busy working on some new surfboards there. They are however now finished and I've even set up a new shop at West of Ireland under the name of DW Surf Co.

It's only a small shop, but it's got a lot of soul lol.

Since the boards are done I did get in some nice SL surfing time earlier. There are some new waves about and that's always good to see. Though I dream of the day SL scripting will allow for something like the waves on Kelly Slater's Pro Surf X-Box Game (you gotta check the moves out on this game if you haven't already. See Youtube).

There seems to be lots going on on SL right now. I'm looking forward to a surf contest at the weekend being held at my local break Monkey Cove. Should be fun :) Catch you all there I hope, peace to the lotta ya! x

The Big Chill

I've been surfing since I was a kid. My dad was a lifeguard so I was thrown in the big chill at an early age. My love of the ocean and my need to always be near it led me to become a lifeguard too, though I will stress it's nothing like BayWatch!! Lol, I live in the UK and there is a good reason we Cornish call the water the big chill. A full winter wetsuit topped off with gloves and boots is advisable for the colder months, and wouldn't go amis in the warmer ones either. I've been retired for a few years now, but of course I still surf, every chance I get to be honest :)

I've always found the name "the big chill" appropriate on a personel level, because that's what I do out there, I chill out, it relaxes me to my very soul. I'm a longboarder in the main. But I do love mini mals and have a soft spot for a retro fish that has been with me for some time. When not working or surfing or raising my family, I chill out on Second Life. I don't have time for any competitions on there but very much enjoy being a Monkey Cove local :)

This is one of my fave waves at the mo on Second Life, and I'm riding it here on my own designed board. I'm a real life surfer (very experienced) so I really appreciate the effort of those on SL that work hard to make the boards and the waves as real as possible. Tis a cool place just to chill and daydream. Lol, nothing wrong with daydreaming. Good for the mind.
